In Europe we will see an increasing activity to restructure existing built-up areas in cities and towns. In the early stages of the urban planning process for such areas, there are good opportunities to realise energy efficiency and CO2-reduction targets through a combination of rational use of energy (RUE) and renewable energy sources (RES). Local authorities have a specific and dominant role in promoting and facilitating the process on energy efficiency in urban planning and can take the lead in a process to reduce CO2-emissions on locations.
In the period 2008-2009 ENPIRE will evaluate the state of the art on energy and urban planning in seven Euroepan countries to gain and share experience on “Energy and Urban Planning”. In 7 urban restructuring areas in the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Ireland, Spain and The Netherlands a local project will be realised for which specific energy vision study is performed. On the basis of the experience gained in each of the local projects a set of general recommendations and guidelines will be formulated and and best practice examples will be described.
ENPIRE has an active dissemination policy and focuses on local target groups in all EU 27 Member States such as project developers, social housing associations, inhabitants, energy companies and network organisations. Special attention will be paid to the local context in Eastern Europe.
The ENPIRE project has finished in December 2009. The Final Report can be downloaded here.
During the closing meeting of the international ENPIRE project at 19th November in Dublin the results were presented.
